My absolute honour to be interviewed by Bertrand F My absolute honour to be interviewed by Bertrand Fournier for @iceomagazine featured in the latest issue of their very beautiful publication.

Bertrand and I discuss @artetjardinshdf and how I became 1 of 14 designers selected globally to design a garden to remember the ending of the 1st world war, representing Ireland. The 30’ below street level garden I designed was in the dried up moat of 13th C Château de Péronne and was Inaugurated in 2019 alongside Embassy of Ireland France - Ambassade d'Irlande en France then Amb Patricia O’Brien and @irish_in_france.

The castle known also as @historial1418 Historial de la Grande Guerre is home to Europes largest war museum who not only have the most amazing staff but also is well worth visiting - We delve into the latest garden I designed there in 2022. In this occasion in the inner defence courtyard (a place you are not meant to get into, which made the design for build a little interesting).

We talk looking to the future but remembering the past, daydreams and gardens that are borne from that matter but also have a billion equations behind the curtains….. and a little darkness behind the research when (self imposed) submerged into a horrorful wars research in order to be able to realise the opposite and convey that message on behalf of a town that became my 2nd home and that I adore.

The 2nd garden was Inaugurated in 2022 Hervé Francois (Director, Historial de la Grande Guerre, Peter Donegan (Landscape Designer), @guillaume_duflot (President Historial de la Grande Guerre), @stephane_haussoulier President du @sommeledepartement Yael Menache (Deputy), Valérie Kumm (Councilor Departmental), Michéal Tierney (Deputy Ambassador, Irish Embassy France), Jean-Paul MULOT (Conseiller régional @region_hautsdefrance).

The small project BIG IMPACT awards celebrate excellence in the complexity and value of smaller schemes throughout the UK.

Heralding the projects that often go unnoticed at other awards within the landscaping community. Leading professionals within the garden design and build sectors will appraise the ‘BIG IMPACT’ of each project, and also mark each project on its quality in construction and design.

The awards sponsored by @provendernurseries and in the Special Feature category by @stone.warehouse are all about excellence in individual projects. They celebrate how people within the industry overcome the restrictions and still create exceptional landscapes. @prolandscaper magazine announced the shortlist in October’s issue. The winners will receive their awards at an invite-only awards ceremony at @futurescapeevent Event 2022 at The @excellondon.

Project: The Courtyard Garden Location: Mercy Coll Project: The Courtyard Garden
Location: Mercy College Sligo, Ireland
Design: Peter Donegan Garden Design

Description:
The garden is based in the centre of the school, visible via classrooms and corridors on all 4 sides.

The garden features
1) A covered outdoor classroom based loosely on The Giants Causeway with varied height permanent seating, accessible spacing between and SUDS paving.
2) A 3.49 metre tall, 4 legged Juicy Salif giant squid-esque structure. It’s head is elevated slightly, in between containing an anemometer and full weather station linked to the science classroom;
3) Café Merci, sited outside the Home Economics room featuring the schools logo with elevated culinary planting designed to allow students a place to sit and chat in an environment that encourages conversation.
4) Planting of year round interest, colour and scent that encourages biodiversity and nature and stimulates the mind.
5) The courtyard garden is a daydream, backed entirely by equations and made only ever to appear like a daydream, designed for those who will most use and gain from it.
