The Battle Of The Boyne Site

...

The Battle Of The Boyne Site was visited by The Garden Group yesterday Sunday 27th June.

For a group that is entirely run free gratis yesterday would not have been possible without the help of Aisling Mc Mahon of the OPW and her team who gave us a personal guided tour of the grounds and access to areas that are not as yet open to the public.


The place is absolutely brimmed with history. That aside, from a personal point of view, as having restored and designed 17th and 18th century landscapes, to see the before and then the end result after landscape restoration is simply amazing. I know I am not alone when I say I will return to this place.

There is so much more there than just history to see and do here. It’s also free as long as you don’t do the guided tour of the house. Which you should. The landscape is simply breath taking. Two displays were taking place while we were there. The coffee shop is a must…. the list goes on. Go. Visit. Enjoy. Wander in the long grass.

Shawna Coronado @ bloom 2010

...

I had interviewed and reviewed Shawna’s book before. I knew from some time back that she was on her way to Dublin for Bloom 2010 so we had this interview lined up a long time before hand.

Naturally and of course, there was an evening were a few of us met up for some refreshments in Dublin City Centre. It goes with the turf 😉

That aside, I tried to leave the interview uncut as best as possible. And on a serious note, Shawna is a true lady. It was an absolute honour to finally meet and chat with her in person. More than that, I’m a big believer in that that she believes in and speaks so energetically on the subject of.

So You Wish To Sow Seeds

Of course I have written pieces on this before but…. now is the time to get grooving in the seedling department….

It is one of the simplest things one can do. The beauty about these wieghtless flecks of dust is that one doesn’t need a vast area of space. One simply needs an area anything greater than one inch squared 😉 And the shops and garden centres are brimming with all of the paraphernalia one could ever need…. and more!

A lot of it is pure clap trap, not really needed…. and of course there is always a very simple way to grow your own from seed. The very enthusiastsic Jane Powers article on the trials and tribulations of seed growing may prove beneficial at this point.

For me, personally, I’m gonna start off in the herb garden department. I’ve got my packets from last year [basil is an absolute must… followed swiftly by parsley] and I’ve gone far too long without fresh herbs…. I won’t get 14 degrees celcius outside nor in the glasshouse  – but I will get it on the kitchen window ledge inside…..and that’s exactly where I’m gonna sow my first seeds of this year.

Now all I need to do is wash out that old jam jar and I’m good to go…. and I also know where I can hang that second maximum minimum thermometer I bought 😉

I did this wee video last year… it was done with runner beans but the same rules apply to any seed irrespective of size. Let me know how you get on…. 😉

Trim 2025 – the carbon [r]evolution begins

Before you read this – read Trim 2025 to go carbon neutral

In what may have seemed, to some, like an almost niaive scenario to percieve… it now seems that young Martin Tighe literally has started what is now the most enviable vision ever to evolve worldwide and this one from a town in Ireland called Trim. Ladies and gentlemen… The carbon revolution has just begun.

In an all star headline act some spoke of the redemption required to change that same old heads of town events, boards and committees…. and whilst the presence of Noel Dempsey may have attracted some – it was the fine and independent minded speaking of David Mc Williams who stole the show.

That was until the music kicked off….

Whether you are 6, 16 or 106 years old… this really was a day for Trim, in its entirety, to stand tall and to be extremely proud. I’m not talking some group of contrary county councillors seeking to prove their worth to the local papers and a bunch of men in suits holding cardboard cheques… This is close on verging Bono country and it is every piece of energy that a green revolution should be.

One last thing before – the last thing…. where the fork where the green party….?

Martin Tighe, stand up sir and take a bow…. The world is watching.


The one thing I took from this…..? anyone, any person all of the doom and gloom merchants, the nay sayers…. you know who you are and if not, everyone knows at least one……. fork you! It can be done. I listened to young Martin. No older that 30 years old – who took on an entire town… and won’t stop there. I listened to Mc Williams…. stuff the government and stuff you if you are sitting on your arse looking for someone to blame. We know what they can’t do…. but you can. And you can. As a btw… I’m almost 10 years in business. I borrowed the tools for my first job. I’ve never been the recipient of any welfare or grants of any format…. and now Martin who doesn’t even live in Trim…..  and you know what he’s right…. I’ll give him the final word….

Saturday & Sunday 12th & 13th of September 2009 sees some of Irelands top horticulturalists come together at the Garden Exhibition Centre in Kilquade to raise awareness and funds for Peter Donegan to travel to South Arica in what is his third year building community gardens. 28 stunning sample gardens, cream cakes and great coffee, pet arena, garden guest speakers with Q& A sessions and live music and a host of activities for family and children. All for the price of a donation.

Because of your 10 cents, your 10 euro or even your very much appreciated 10 minutes I have managed to go there for the last 2 years. This year, this November I’m going again. The event above is gonna be a jam packed family day out with soooooo much to do and plenty for the gardener, the non gardener or the wannabe gardener…. Take a look at what the garden of hope team managed last year….

here’s a taster of what will be on offer and a little information on the charity….

it’s going to be held in the garden Exhibition Centre in Kilquade which is already an amazing place here’s some of what they have to offer….

not only that…. but the very kind gentlemen of The Riptide Movement – a band that are booked to play support for none other than Fleetwood Mac in the o2 😆 are coming along on the Sunday to play some tunes from their debut album….
