Podcasts @ The Dot Conf

A Visit to The Dot Conf website is well worth a visit.

Before I go any further…. not surprising, the dot conf conference has been a sell out for some weeks now and its waiting list only. I think its 300 people attending. [?]

...

My good friend Darren Byrne and Phil O’Kane then did these for me. Thanks also to Anthony McG who installed the widget for me. Really appreciated 😉

This is the dot conf’s promo video

From the article I was intending to publish, these stats are quite interesting,

New Media Update Podcasting News – wrote an article called Podcast Fans Are The Ultimate Audience For Advertisers – I took the main bullet points out of it just to give you an idea of the reach[?] that podcasting actually has.

  • Podcast fans are significantly more affluent than general population.
  • Podcast fans are rapidly turning away from traditional media and “interruption” advertising models.
  • 37% of video podcast users and 31% of audio podcast users say they *enjoy* advertising in podcasts. By comparison, only 6% say same of TV and radio.
  • Podcasts confer on their advertisers and sponsors a “halo effect; podcast fans give props to the advertiser for sponsoring a show they like.
  • Over 70% of active podcast listeners are receptive to sponsorship messages in podcasts.

*Thanks to Roseanne Smith for this link

  • One in five active podcast consumers are actively interested in host-read sponsorship messages. Survey respondents believe that podcast hosts/creators are actual users of the goods and services of their sponsors.
  • Nearly 4/5 of the survey interviewees listen to podcasts every week, but are not as reachable by other “regular” mass media.
  • Podcast fans say it is not just important to be able to “time-shift” their podcast and other media consumption; nearly equally important is the ability to get unique shows [not available outside of podcast medium].
  • 90% of those surveyed prefer advertising supported shows vs. ad-free paid subscriptions.
  • 3/4 of the respondents use iTunes to find and subscribe and 66% have been listening/watching podcasts for 2 years or more

And finally here’s Bernie’s scratch and sniff boo 😉

IIA net visionary awards…

....?

....?

Tonight the Irish Internet Association Net Visionary Awards 2009 take place.

I have been shortlisted.

For me that is huge. In fact when I first heard, this is what I thought [click here]. But… I am a horticuluralist. And this is why I blog. *Anything* that comes after that is an added bonus 🙂 If it where a garden…. I may think different. For the moment I’m just happy to be on a list.

And just look at the others shortlisted…. I still don’t know how I even got there…..

Aedan Ryan: PuddleDucks.ie
Damien Mulley: Mulley Communications
Kieran Murphy: Murphy’s Ice Cream
Maryrose Lyons: Brightspark Consulting
Peter Donegan: Peter Donegan Landscaping

That said, for no apparent reason, I won’t be able to attend tonights function. But for whoever you are out there that did nominate, shortlist, or however it works, get me to the last five… thank you. It really is [more than you realise] an absolute honour. Have a great night and in advance congratulations to you all.

And don’t forget it is not a black tie event…. 😆

UPDATE: 21st May ’09:

huge congratulations to damien mulley and mulley communications for winning this award. Bulaidh bós mór Damien.

All award winners can be viewed at the Irish Internet Associations website

net visionary, blog, money… me?!!

a visionary...?

a visionary...?

Not a chance… !

In The Sunday Business Posts Computers In Business magazine, April 5th 2009, a fine article  was written, in which I was quoted… the title of this piece:

Blogging: does it pay?

You can read the full article here. The mentions of me were thus….

Peter Donegan, an avid blogger who runs an award-winning horticultural business, Peter Donegan Landscaping, agreed.

“I think if making money from your blog is important to you, this will show through,” Donegan said. “Once that starts to happen, people will start to see you for what you are, which is a guy looking to make money from blogging.”

and later on in the article….

“I don’t believe I’ve ever made money from blogging,” he said.” For me, blogging is just good fun. It’s something I do in my spare time and I’d be surprised if anyone is making money out of it.”

If the questions were, have I ever made money from writing a weblog… then these were my answers. I had also written a blog post called why [I] bother with a blog…

Whilst I might take the belief that one shouldn’t knock what makes another smile… each to their own… be it writing poetry, gardening, painting etc…. as long as you are happy; then writing and gardening combined is my hobby. It makes me happy. 99.9% of the time I am always extremely happy…..

More recently, unusually possibly, I have been shortlsted for the IIA Net Visionary Awards….. What?!! I imagined 2 guys at a bus stop….

Did you hear Peter Donegan is a visionary

He’s a what….?

Yeah, he’s a net visionary

He’s a what….??

It doesn’t make sense to me at all. I don’t even know how I got there. I have a t-shirt that says on the front…. it’s not the winning that counts it’s the arsing around. I think I’ll wear it tomorrow night when I’m playing guitar at the trad session in the local teach tabhairne 😆

UPDATE: the others short listed nominees in the net visionary best business blogger category are:
