The Magical Orchard Hedgerow Walk

crab apples

There are 2 more hedgerow events [so far] proposed between this and the year end. I will note them here as they arise. To The Walk….

I spoke about it in depth on Friday’s SodShow, but Sunday 9th October saw the Magical Orchard Walk take place with the Ballyboughal Hedgerow Society.

I never knew this was sitting right on our doorstep….. sure, what else would you be doing  on a Sunday afternoon

I however how done this walk so many times. Every-time it is simply magical.

A nice mix of never been and experienced, aged from the very young upwards made the day out. Haws or Hawthorn berries were tasted, Sloe’s were eaten for the first time for many, on the go impromptu Nettle leaf eating demonstrations took place all the while varying types and colours of crab apples were tried and tested.

As we travelled, we passed by fields of freshly sown winter wheat, acres of onions that were left never to make it to the super-markets and queried the identification of Charlock versus Rapeseed. The list here could go on for ages….. We even stumbled across a tree into which someone had etched their initials – it was dated 1936.

A great day out. A breath of fresh air. Some apple jelly for my troubles. 😉

Heritage Week 2011 – Slí na Sceacha

hedgerow walk heritage week 2011

I meant to put this post up sometime ago but I got caught up making gardens and generally just busy doing the day job.

My compliments however go to Heritage Week 2011 and the crew behind the scenes.

The Heritage Council assumed the role of coordinator of National Heritage Week from the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government in 2005. Since then the week has grown into a highly successful programme of over 1000 events which take place during the last week of August each year.

Last year for Heritage Week you may remember I visited Boyle Abbey. But this year it was the turn of Dublin and I of course chose the nature walk through the lands of Corduff in North County Dublin.

Many turned up because they heard locally, but it is fair to say more because they had read the brochure. Some had heard of the Hedgerow Society, few of us knew the land we were walking in North County Dublin actually existed.

The Hedgerow Walk

hedgerow walk dublin

Sunday 7th August, saw a revisit to the Slí na Sceacha also known as the Hedgerow Society as the group took another journey through the ditches and outback of some of Dublin’s lesser known lands and trails.

The Hedgerow Way (mp3)

From field grown potato to brassicae and from what are soon to be the finest apples and blackberries [all free gratis], this time the group took what we called the fruiting trail. Brilliant from an exercise and fresh air perspective, more than that it is time spent with others in the great outdoors surrounded by nature.

I think the pictures tell a better story.
