Garden Workshop: Container and Kitchen Gardening, Thyme and Place, Salt Lake City

Sunday 19th March 2017.

During my time in Salt Lake City, (more on that when I catch my breath) I gave two courses at boutique garden store Thyme and Place, Utah.

The first on container gardening took re-purposed wooden boxes, sponsored by Barebones Living and turned them into, in short, miniature gardens. From how to care for plants and keep them alive to the actual design technique and piecing the selcted plants together to create a stunning display.

The second class I gave was on growing your own kitchen garden. Specifically aimed at those who had as some may call it, a brown thumb. The basics covered, watering and capillary action (sounds technical, but it’s not explained right) – all the way through to seed grermination and potting on.

Horticulture Guest Lecture. Colaiste Dhulaigh

colaiste dhulaigh

It was a real honour to be asked to be Guest Lecturer to the horticultural students at Coláiste Dhúlaigh, Dublin today. It seems I can indeed talk for more than 3 hours without breathing.

On a serious note, to you gentlemen and lady [singular], who listened, asked and engaged whilst I noted random thoughts from my head via my vocal chords, may I thank you so very much for being genuinely so very lovely.

Also and of note to head don Sarjit Verik, who made sure I got there and welcomed me with a big beaming smile, thank you too. It was a real honour.

To that, some bits and bobs I noted today:

The rest of it, you’ll be able to find here relatively easily. Apart from my noting that Elvis never fried an egg wearing that big white suit.

Best for now and chat soon,
Peter

Garden Class @ The Summer Art School

donegan gardens

This week I did a garden class with Amy Cooney’s Summer Art Class in Ballyboughal. For those who may not be aware, that’s in North County Dublin, just outside of Swords and it’s also my own home town.

It was great to be asked and always an interesting phone call with Amy, the latter is partly because she’s a pretty darned talented artist and has a really cracking eye for interior design. Which is sort of the opposite of what I do.

The ages at the gig ranged from under 4 to around 12-ish and armed with some fresh-cut from my homestead garden props it was a nice moment when the smallest began finishing off correctly my sentences when I was chatting the life cycle of a plant. In this case an apple tree.

We planted garlic cloves in compostable pots and chatted how they’ll never have to buy garlic again if they look after this one and how to look after it and then with the help of some volunteers we did the sowing watercress in cotton wool gig. Always loved doing that when I was a smaller. And then forgetting that I’d actually placed them in the bowl on top of the fridge. And then remembering that I had about 72 weeks later. Mad stuff altogether.  Always makes me smile.

Cheers to all for a cracker of a morning.

On a mild side note, this weeks Sodshow might prove of interest to some taller people who look after younger people 😉
