Irish Gardening Books and Shops

...

As one can gather… I have quite a vast and varied gardening book collection. But recently I have found it quite extremely difficult to buy anything that could be considered original. Even more difficult than that is to find anything at all original and Irish.

I did email hughes and hughes. I also emailed easons. For those outside of Ireland they are probably Irelands biggest retailers of books. I queried who selected the books for the gardening section…. it was some time ago now but I got no answer.

Once again, I was in Waterstones [not the most Irish] book shop on Dawson Street. Yes folks, when I’m not scouring the aisles looking for nouveau paraphernalia I am looking for new reading material. 😉 Waterstones deserve massive applause. They don’t know me. I don’t know them…. but we have more books in common than other book shop in Ireland.

A lot of them are specialist, or coffee table style books – but a higher than others percentage are Irish, written and referenced.

...

There are two main issues. Or two things I look for when choosing a book. The first is, is the book of any use or is it just a rehash of something that has already existed. Most recently, you will find that has appeared in the ‘organic’ or ‘grow your own’ department. Formerly it was simply called growing fruit and vegetables. But en vogue labelling obviously sells.

The second issue, after I narrow it down to a book I like is, as I can gather, is that most books are published for the UK market. That’s absolutely fine. But when it comes to the reference bit at the back… they are all UK companies. If for example it is to do with recycling…. it makes the book of very little use.

...

I know there are great books out there. I know there are great independent book stores out there. I am not all wishing to knock here. I am I suppose hoping it may [at the very least] improve the quality of what is for sale on the market at this moment in time. To those who don’t have grandiose garden book collections… it’s very akin, to analogise, to only being able to buy Stock, Aitken and Waterman music.

Whilst I am on the subject, there are always those a little more amazing and unique at their job…. If you do know one of them… go ahead and give them a mention.

If this post makes a difference, a publishing house wishes for me to review their garden books… a book shop wishes to put their message out in response to this – I am more than happy to do so. From this maybe we will all gain…. All you have to do is contact me.

Autumn Colour…

Can you imagine if every house in Ireland planted just one tree, how beautiful would this country look….

...

I really do love this time of year.

Last week I was walking down Griffith Avenue and being honest it almost brought me back to my childhood days of not that long ago…
I used to love the leaves on the ground and absolutely hated it when people swept them all up and made the place look tidy. When I saw the piles I was one of those ‘little terrors’ who kicked them all over the place and most likely got an ear clipping for it 😆
Sidetracking slightly, Jane Powers who does the Irish Times garden column, this weekend wrote about the beauty of autumn colour. A great read. Bulaidh bós Jane.
You see, landscaping, well more the trends [?] took a turn for the worst in my opinion over the last few years. Trees, if not all then most definitely the larger members of the family were not allowed. They became surplus to requirement. Some, quarantined them in the high maintenance category. So much so that I find it hard to find [for example] a ‘conker tree’ in North County Dublin…. which is why I went to Griffith Avenue 😉 [I also visited my older brother who lives just off and had some home made chocalate pie and real coffee….]
But its not until, maybe, one sees a tree in its finest splendour through a season that one thinks…. well maybe I would like one of those. And with that in mind tree planting season is almost upon us…. Now is the time to decide that you would like.
Can you imagine if every house in Ireland planted just one tree how beautiful this country would look. If you don’t plant one…buy one for somebody you like to brighten their day up… then go and admire their one… or rake some leaves up and allow the kids to kick them all over the place…. 😆
As a by the way…. autumn colour is brought about by a build up in sugars from warm temperatures during the day and then a cold night where the sugars are held in the leaf.

reheated coffee causes cancer….?!!

Firstly this is relevant to the business. We all have an office. We all need good coffee. Second Mrs D does help out where she can and this was one where she was trying to. On Sunday I went to get a new coffee maker in another electrical store, because, a few days before…

Thursday 17th September 2009 ‘herself’ went to D.I.D. electrical store in Airside retail park to buy a new coffee machine for the office. I had returned my most recent purchase because it kept leaking. ‘Her indoors’ decided it was a task she wished to complete and so she went in.

What happened next is nothing short of the most amazing…

sales: can I help you….

mrs D: yes I’m looking for a coffee machine

sales: have you seen the nespresso range… ?

mrs D: i was looking for with that would make a big pot of coffee to be honest…

sales: well this range actually stays fresher longer and the one in the coffee pot if you keep reheating… I don’t want to scare you but that gives you cancer

mrs D: [funny look given]

sales: no… its true

mrs D: well its not for me its for a regular real coffee drinker

sales: well tell him to come in and i’ll make him the best cup of coffee he’s ever had. I bought one of these [nespresso machines] for my girlfriend and she loves it… but, I dont actually drink coffee myself.

I’m still baffled….

how to look green…. doing very little

***the video works, the screen just appears funny – press play & enjoy 😉

I was sitting in my back garden having coffee with Thomas from Irish Allotments

I had been showing him the video that Dave from 98fm did for me. Dave and I got talking last week and I was asking how does one make these cheesy video’s 😉

With Tom at the helm, I took out the N95 [yes a telephone 😉 ] and we gave it a whirl….

The garden advice is very solid and quite logic…. that said, talk about having fun in the garden. 😆 sound advice all the same !

finding inspiration…

If garden making and the design of was only considered business, I’d never be inspired…. sometimes i think we simply need to stop [a little more…] and take a look around. Isn’t this a wonderfully beautiful country we live in….

This is Enniscorthy in Wexford.
