At Your Service – Cappagh Hospital Garden

...

At Your Service RTE TV Christmas Special, Cappagh Hospital Garden.

  • When: Wed 22 December 2010,
  • Time: 8 – 8.30pm
  • TV Channel: RTÉ One

Courtesy RTE.ie

Francis and John Brennan are challenged to makeover two children’s wards at the Cappagh Hospital and transform a disused garden space for the in time for the annual Christmas party, but they have no budget and must beg, borrow and steal building materials for the project

It can be watched on RTE player.

Update: This [below] went live after the show and the garden story goes as such:

..

The garden created in Cappagh Hospital was for The RTE 2010 At Your Service Christmas Special, a television programme presented by Sean and Francis Brennan. It began as a result of meeting really nice people and ended knowing that it was an honour to have been in their company.

Around mid October 2010 a phone call came in. The gist was that Laura would like me to build a garden, for free. The lovely voice asked that I come and simply take a look.

...

On initial inspection, the garden space outside had some industrial planting and the courtyard walls were industrial grey. On a more detailed note, the garden had no access, apart from a side alley that one could only access through a semi excavated building site. I then found out the hospital had zero euro of a budget, the garden was to be built within 3 weeks of that day and that that resulting garden maybe shown on Irish television as a Christmas tv special.

...

I agreed. But, the final garden is with massive thanks to so many people who all donated their time, products, services and so much more than the extra mile, because they were very simply nice people. The garden was also just one part of what I can only describe as very much a bigger picture.

There was one day that should be noted when I and George came down to find this poem and note stuck inside the window. The words are now painted on one of the garden walls. In my opinion, if what I have done in this garden achieves what is written in this poem, I’m am quite simply the happiest gardener I know.

Repak Recycle Week 2010

Repak Recycling Week kicks off today Monday October 4th with a focus on Recycling in the Office. Last year you may remember I built a garden [of sorts] with Repak to launch the 2009 Repak Recycle Week.

This year, they have chosen a slightly different route and will be teaming up with The SodcastThe loudest gardening podcast in the world – as podcast sponsors for the month of October.

Today I had a chat with Darrell Crowe of Repak to get a little bit more of an insight into just why and what they had done that little bit different this year.

Garden Of Hope 2010

The Niall Mellon Office have been on the phone. I got a call saying thanks for signing up.

I did… when ? yeah sure why not…..

Last year I had to raise €5k and did the table quiz, the poker night, the gardeners weekend, the famous picture also got a couple of hundred in and I still ran short. But I got there in the end. Thanks to you! I did try getting team donegan sponsored to raise a few bob…. it just didn’t work out for no apparent reason. 😆

If, I do make it this year…. It will be my fourth year travelling with the Niall Mellon Township Trust as part of a very large and amazing team to build the community gardens. And this year I only need to raise €4,250. I got a discount 😀

I’m a big believer in getting something back for your euro, where possible, even if it is for charity and there were a couple of suggestions in as regards raising a few bob.

So everything is for up for a few bob for charity. You can sponsor my podcasts, blog posts, throw money at me for the craic – pay me not to talk…. call me names for a tenner…. whatever!

And all you have to do is click the link and put some money in this my charity account. I’m open to suggestions….

The video above is the story from last year.

Fancy a chat….? The coffee pot is always on the brew or you can contact me via the following options.

Lá Fhéile Phádraig… agus lá na gaeilge 2010

Más mian leat eolas breise feach ar an bhlog Lá na Gaeilge agus ar an website Lá Fheile Phadraig.

...

Ar an lá seo i 2009, scríobh mé píosa ar Lá na Gaeilge agus Lá Fheile Phádraig, as gaeilge. Cén fath? Bheul, is maith liom as gaeile a labhairt. Deacair? Beaganaí beidir. Ach le lá amháin, chun píosa beag a scríobh ar mo bhlog…. Nílim gaelgóir. Tá go lóir chun a fháil trí agam. Ach in aon rud agus i mo thuraim tá sé tábhachtach.

Nur a dhúirt mé faoi gairneoireachta bhí dacrachtaí agam, tháinig deacrachtaí sa bhealach orainn mar is gnách agus shíleamar. Mar atá gairneoireachta saineolaí suibiacht.

...

Ach nur a bhím beidir ceathair bhlaoina daois, táim abálta as gaeilge a labhairt. Tá sé mo teanga dhúchais agus iarracht mé thabhairt ar rud a dhéanamh faoi sin.

Go dtí rudaí atá glas. Beidir rudaí faoi amuigh faoin aer….

Ní maith liom óráid mór a dheanamh ach…. cúpla lá ó shin bhí mé i Pairc Naomh Phadraig. So beidir nach bhfuil sé an tabhachtach nach ndhéanaimid dearmad ar an rud seo. Ar Lá Fheile Phadraig, tá sé phairc agus áit go hana speisiúil ar fad. Ach beidir nach cuimhaimid faoi pairc as Baile Átha Cliath, níl sé an phairc seo.

Le lá amháin, beidh mé ag cáint, ag gáire agus beidir ag dámhsa as gaeilge agus freisin ar an lá seo [beidir] beidh mé ag dul go dtí Pairc Naomh Phadraig le Bean Donagáin.

Peter Donegan – Profile Pictures

peter donegan

I had gone in search of some feedback for the website recently. I felt it needed a few tweeks here and there. Although not via comments, the answers came back in very I didn’t wish to sound like I was insulting you sort of a format.

Outside of the sites text it seemed I was missing some really good high quality photographs of myself.

You are after all the business. You are Peter Donegan. I don’t wanna go searching through a website to see what the man I will do business with looks like….

Fair point. I had some good images, but they were very random…. I rang John Mc Williams. John took this photograph that I’ve been using for some time now. He’s also a good friend. Honest enough to say I like and because. But more than that he is also an extremely talented photographer.

We met on a Sunday. Spent a few hours together. As always with John, it was also time that I enjoyed I should add. We narrowed it down to variations from about 10 images.

The beauty about them is that because the quality of those taken is so high they can become black and white, low to high resolution, head shots or back to colour again at the flick of a button.

Whether it’s for media usage or just for the site…. I have to say to the time spent was a very wise investment on my part. Of course I’m just one of a host of stars Mr McWilliams has had the honour to photograph 😉

Is that Carly Simon I hear playing…. Thanks John 🙂
