The Honesty Bucket

I passed this in Ballyboughal on my way home on Saturday. A slightly different way to sell your fruit and vegetable produce maybe, but one that really made me smile.

Beetroot

One of the easiest crops I have ever grown is beetroot. As they take up very little space and require a very shallow depth of soil for root development, I found these left over cavity blocks quite useful for sowing the seeds.

The varyingly named beets or beetroot are a variety of the Beta vulgaris [chenopodiaceae] and it is, you may or may not be surprised to know] the swollen root that we actually eat.

The books suggest a sowing time from about March to July and a cropping period from around June to October, but I have in the past stretched this a lot further past those boundaries. The basis of the recommended times is generally based on low temperatures causing them to bolt. I have personally found that using a bolthardy variety, suitable placing and maybe some covering has seen me through and I generally sow and harvest when I feel it’s the right time.

As you can gather I also pay zero attention to recommended spacings and seed depths. For those who want to know [?] the recommended pH for growing beetroots in 5.9. Once again this is ideal world scenario and as you can also gather I’ve never bought a pH soil testing kit in my life.

Either or if gardening is all about having a go…. then you wont go too far wrong with these guys and you can always leave a comment if you’re stuck.

Growing Lettuce From Seed

In the good old days of 1980’s Ireland the fashion was to buy part grown lettuce sets in white polystyrene trays. Some chose to sow them from seed, but the idea was to grow your few heads in the vegetable patch… d’ye remember them ? and that’s what Irish children ate for an entire summer. Ah the good old days 😉

Now it seems the fashion and how I like it is not to have to feed on an entire lettuce head and eat it as soon as it’s cropped. One can simply pick and eat a handful of leaves as and when you feel like it. For me they are much tastier and naturally should as they are so much younger and fresher than the outter leaves of a supermarket size lettuce head.

I don’t buy any particular type of brand or seed and generally don’t use a paid for growing medium where I can. There’s not really much else to say for now that I can think of. Any Problems or queries just leave a comment or hit the contact page above.

Cropping My Rhubarb


It’s not that long ago that I mentioned my rhubarb and the fact that I would be cropping it soon.

I did it today. This video, hopefully will help you get the most out of yours. I don’t have that many plants, but I will when I divide them most likely next season. Another video for another day you say. You can of course grow these in pots if you would like some from a small space. As you can see from this and my last post on rhubarb, they get very little special treatment.

The variety I recommend and know best from my college days is Timperly Early
