The Red Exhaust Pipe Bird Feeder

...?

Building a garden recently I was asked for something unusual as a feature for the garden. My imagination being what it is, the idea coming to mind is never a problem. It is however a problem for some clients [?] when they can’t see what has never existed before and ultimately a level of trust and/ or a pre-requisite of an also zany imagination is necessary. The alternate. Buy something off the shelf.

On this occasion it was a small garden. The red dead tree was referred to and also I was told….

I want something that is different, unique, unusual, practical, not 17th century type symetry, a little bit out there… but it’s got to be a looker…

Like I always said the rollling stones on vinyl may cost a fiver second hand… but will always be better than than the €50 double cd remastered

Of course, as simple as it may sound, there’s actually about 3 days work in this thing. The main issue being that it would hold upright with it being so top heavy and the fact that the pipe supporting was not straight…. that said I think it’s really cool.

What I had done, with my good friend and welder genius George was to take the replacement exhaust pipe for my Daewoo Musso jeep [a 2.5 merc engine btw], give it a labotomy in an attempt to reduce the weight of the combustion chamber; weld some re-bar and other bits to the base so that concrete-less it would still stand upright; paint it burning red and rivet some refelective metal to it allowing us to hook in a bird feeder… then we dropped it into a new look and rebuilt garden…. of course there was a lot more to it than that…. but you get my gist 😉

building repak recycle week 09

....
....

Its a little of a crazy one when given a one day build time for any garden… everything must go perfectly according to plan…

Unknows to most preparation for this garden started about 7 weeks ago.

‘The greenhouse effect’ was intended to be a full and proper garden but as things do change… the ‘fail to prepare’ cliché definitely lent itself to this one. Once again it is only by working alongside such amaing people that everything runs so smoothly and it [some may say 😉 ] appears to be so easily done.

There are people involved in this short time frame build who where given literally hours notice, there are those who would have been on the phone to me on their weekends and/ or well into the wee hours of the night. In fact there was at one point 2 wheelie bins being cut up at approximately 11pm at night… once again at an hours notice [thanks John 😉 ] To those who did make life that little more enjoyable rather than work stressful. Thank you. It is also because of you that I love so very much what it is I do. 🙂

repak recycle week 2009….

recycle more....
recycle more....

I  disappeared for the last couple of days…. the main reason was that I was creating a garden [of sorts 😉 ] for Repak Recycle Week.

The official launch is tomorrow [wednesday 7th October ’09] at 9.30am. That said there’s also an evening session kicking off between 6 & 7 pm in The Library Bar [in the Central Hotel] [opposite dunnes stores] on Exchequer Street [ just off Georges Street] where some of the social meeja will convene for a few drinks. If you’re around the area pop your head in and say hi…. 🙂

If you can’t make it, you can always pop along and see whats been done in the front window of Dunnes Stores on Exchequer Street. if I don’t see you tomorrow night I’ll explain more in another blog post… 😉

donegan, electric picnic & a pink boat

I went down to electric picnic ’09 on the Sunday, late in the aftrenoon. Just for the one night/ day. My good friends Michael & Nicola were getting married on the Saturday and I couldn’t miss that 😉

Thanks so much to Sian Maloney, Anthony Sarah, Amy & sis Blaithín Ben and all the really nice people I met there for all their kindness. Really, so very much appreciated. 🙂

Most by now know the story of the pink boat and electric picnic…. click here and have a good read if you don’t.

Anyhow, Sarah took this picture 😉 The boat has changed, a bit. But, like the EP boys promised it still has a good home 🙂

aaah..... ;)

a recycled show garden…

Remember this post about the smithfield festival….?

Here’s what they said:
In association with the [myplant.ie] rediscovery centre ballymun and waste management, dublin city council, award winning landscape designer peter donegan returns to smithfield aiming to create a small urban garden of sorts filled with nothing but what could have been thrown out and free to take including washing machines, cookers, satellite dishes and basically anything else he can lay his hands on! from landfills and repairs to greens and growing and from throw away useless to a simple bit of that’ll do just fine.

Here’s what happens in one day. In Dublin City Centre. When one has one day to put a show garden together…..

The beauty about this garden is that the plants will be split 3 ways and donated to 2 local community garden groups in smithfield and also in ballymun. Thanks once again to Pat Fitzgerald, all of the other electrical goods will return and again be recycled and the recycled furniture will return to Ballymun to be sold
