Garden Planters: Handmade and Planted. Dublin, Ireland.

hand made, garden planters, dublin

These garden planters were hand made in Dublin, Ireland.

Marked to measure using a pencil & a set square – old school – and precision cut & trimmed. The planters made from recycled timber – by client request on this occasion, were then twice sanded using a block of wood and sand paper and screwed together – very important in Irish weather and finally, hand painted twice – for added protection – in Henry Ford’s favourite colour.  Read more

Garden Pests: Lupin Aphid, Macrosiphum albifrons

When I was about 5 or 6, one of the first things I thought myself to do was to get Geraniums to produce roots by simply placing them in a saucer of water. My pocket money, far better spent on compost (and football stickers) once I’d figured that technique out and moved onto propagating Cacti, that in mind, could never afford me the luxury of purchasing rooting powder. Back to the geraniums, their biggest pest was the Aphid; better known to you may be as whitefly or, Trialeurodes vaporariorum to be exact.  Read more

Landscaping Dublin: Lawn Construction

I don’t do negatives in life as best as I possibly can, or at all. I find the dwelling on them an entirely pointless exercise. Problems, as best as possible should be dealt with and or very simply eliminated, move on and enjoy the finer things in life.

On this occasion however, in order to tell you the very good I need to dwell a little on the bad, at some point – I’ll sidetrack to that shortly – solely so as one may contrast what makes or constructs a better best lawn.

This is the story of a lawn. What it was was previously and how it was constructed correctly.  Read more

Landscaping: Malahide, Dublin

If there were awards for what it was and what it has become, this now garden has to be up there with the very best of them. And that again, as is pretty much always the case – in the great ones department – comes down to one major factor – really, really great people to work with and for.

Before I go any further, the for now end result needs a phase 2.1 if you will. And that will happen, in time.

Note bené: I’m always hesitant to pop in images of the before or during works; and tend just to stick to the after. On this occasion however, I don’t really have that much of a choice. You’ll understand as you read on. While I’m at it, please excuse my slightly terrible video skills. Read more

Tree Planting: Dublin, Private Back Garden

Tree planting, for me is a lot like The Who, Who’s Next album. You know that Baba O’Reilly is always going to be the first track. And though, you may leave that vinyl unplayed for an entire season; every time you let that needle down gently, the crackle begins and that same thrill tingle settles in all over again.

Trees similarly, are for the greater part planted in their dormant state, through the off seasons whilst they are sleeping. And one knows, horticultural hat now firmly on your heart, that the buds will burst, the rain will trickle down, and the foliage rustle increasing in volume all the while, until that day when the dappled sunshine allows you take a little rest beneath its now full canopy.  Read more
